Poulenc's "Banalités"

After France surrendered to German occupation in 1940, composer and pianist, Francis Poulenc (1899-1963), was released from serving as a soldier and returned to his home in Noizay where he composed Banalités, a set of five melodies for voice and piano.

Despite the dark mood in France, Poulenc’s compositional style remained “extremely varied in character, ranging from the craziest buffoonery to the most sincere lyricism,” (Bernac, The Interpretation of French Song).

Tune in this winter to hear me sing this fun and varied song cycle!
