My Story

Praised by Opera Canada for her “depth of characterization and technical command [which] owned the room,” Canadian soprano Chelsea Kutyn is recognized for her dramatic nuance,  vocal clarity, and emotionally stirring performances. Deeply committed to truthful storytelling, Chelsea is drawn to repertoire that demands psychological complexity and expressive vulnerability, but also enjoys a light-hearted good time and thrives in comedy. Whether on the operatic stage or in concert, her performances are grounded in sincerity and a belief that music must come from the heart to create genuine human connection.

Recent operatic engagements include Mary in Remembering Mary’s Wedding (MacDonald) and Bard in Ben Moore’s Odyssey with Pacific Opera Victoria, where she has also appeared in bit roles in Ainadamar, Le Nozze di Figaro, and The Birds. She has performed Magda in Menotti’s The Consul with Opera NUOVA and portrayed Poppea in L’incoronazione di Poppea. Her repertoire spans Baroque to contemporary works, reflecting both stylistic versatility and interpretive depth.

As a concert soloist, Chelsea has appeared with the Regina Symphony Orchestra in Handel’s Messiah and with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra performing Norina's aria "Quel guardo il cavaliere" from Donizetti's Don Pasquale. A frequent collaborator with chamber ensembles, such as Victoria Baroque, Chelsea performs repertoire ranging from Monteverdi to Vaughan Williams, bringing warmth of tone and expressive sensitivity to both orchestral and intimate recital settings.

Chelsea holds a Master of Music in Vocal Performance from the University of Manitoba, where she studied with Monica Huisman, and a Bachelor of Commerce in Entrepreneurship from the University of Victoria. Her artistic development has been shaped by advanced training programs including Manitoba Opera’s Digital Emerging Artist Program and Opera NUOVA’s Apprentice Program, as well as masterclasses with leading performers and coaches. This foundation supports a career defined not only by musical excellence, but by curiosity, collaboration, and creative initiative.

Equally committed to creation and production, Chelsea developed Helen’s Wedding, a digital opera short created in collaboration with Manitoba Opera through the Digital Emerging Artist Program and her company, Revive Productions. She will next produce the Canadian premiere of Nao-Chan by Ai Horton in collaboration with Pacific Opera Victoria, continuing her dedication to innovative storytelling and contemporary voices.

Currently preparing to audition across Canada and Europe, Chelsea looks forward to expanded operatic and concert engagements in the 2026/27 season. With a voice rooted in clarity and expressive depth, she is committed to building a career that bridges tradition and new creation, always in service of connection, artistry, and the transformative power of live performance.
